What is the situation in
Egypt
Highly urbanized with a rapidly growing youth population, Egypt is home to over 100 million people and 260,000 registered refugees and asylum-seekers. Despite complications precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, Egypt has been able to provide public health and education resources for refugees . However, continued humanitarian assistance is critical to the survival of countless refugees in the region. Nearly 30% of the population lived below the national poverty line in 2019/2020, and COVID-19 has worsened conditions since then for many refugees who recently lost their sources of income and can no longer afford basic necessities or housing.
Gender Gap Index
Further, Egypt ranked 134 out of 153 countries worldwide on the 2020 Global Gender Gap Index, which measures the magnitude of gender disparities based on economic, education, health, and political factors. Women make up a significantly smaller portion of the labor force and have lower literacy rates than men in Egypt, particularly in rural areas
UMR has implemented several programs targeting Egypt’s most vulnerable communities:
- Originally a single-country project implemented in Jordan, UMR’s Jasmine Project now bolsters women’s empowerment in Egypt as well. The project offers women refugees, often heads of households and primary breadwinners, handicraft classes and entrepreneurship training to facilitate their economic independence. Learn more about the Jasmine Project here.
- UMR has also distributed food parcels to vulnerable communities in Egypt during the month of Ramadan. Learn more about our food security projects here.
