UMR International Missions

As an international organization, UMR completes service missions all over the world providing much needed humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and recovery service to marginalized communities. We have previously sent volunteers to Bangladesh to assist at medical clinics for Rohingya refugees, Kenya and Jordan to complete hearing aid and cataract procedures, Yemen and Gaza to help with food distributions, and Lebanon to aid with non-food item distributions including backpacks for school children and winter kits for families, to list a few of our impactful trips. While we have previously limited recruitment for our service missions in years past, we plan to open up our international service opportunities to a much wider audience beginning in 2021 and it all starts right here! The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed vulnerable populations around the world to the brink more than ever before and we need your help to provide these communities with much needed assistance. As our slogan implies, we work best by expanding our community of volunteers because we are truly #BetterTogether and we hope you’ll join us in fulfilling our mission of sustainable development for today, tomorrow, and the years to come! We’ll try to provide as much information as possible in our FAQ below related to the details of our service missions, the requirements to partake, and the process to get involved:

And be sure to scroll down to the bottom of the page to view some uplifting photos  of our previous international volunteer engagements. We hope they further motivate you to get involved and that you’ll be featured in them sooner rather than later!

International Mission FAQ's

We plan to start expanding our international service opportunities to Jordan and Kenya at first where we have offices located to support us as a logistics hub.

We hope so eventually! But first we want to arrange service missions in countries where we have strong partnerships arranged and programs being implemented on the ground. It also helps that we have international offices in these two countries to support our volunteers who will be assisting us on the missions.

We will have a variety of different types of service missions you will be able to sign up to participate in. These will include but are not limited to:

    • Food Distributions
    • Non-Food Item Distributions (Winter Kits, Backpacks and School Supplies, Clothes, etc.)
    • Cataract & Hearing Aid Missions
    • Medical Mission Trips to Provide Preventive Healthcare
    • Child Protection and Education Programs

All of our available service missions and registrations forms will be listed on this page. We will also advertise their announcement on our social media accounts including Instagram, Facebook, and our newsletter. Make sure you are subscribed or following those pages so you won’t ever have to worry about missing out!

Nope! Our volunteers can be from anywhere in the world, provided you are allowed to travel to the destination of our service mission. Make sure to check your country’s travel restrictions or any other limitations that might interfere with your ability to travel such as vaccinations, visa applications, and any other travel documents needed. UMR will not assist you in obtaining any necessary requirements to travel and is not responsible if you are barred from traveling due to lack of obtaining any requirements needed to travel.

Unfortunately there are. UMR volunteers will need:

    • To be at least 25 years of age or older
    • Proficiency in English and/or Arabic
    • To be able to cover certain financial costs associated with the trips
    • Raise a minimum of $1,000  for UMR at least 1 month before the mission date (can plug fundraising pages here too)
      • The funds you raise will be put toward the programmatic costs of your trip such as purchasing medical equipment, food supplies, in-kind donations, etc. Not only does this show us your commitment to your service but guarantees that the funds you raise will contribute to a direct impact on your mission!

Any inability to meet all of the above requirements will regrettably prevent you from participating in our service trips.

Volunteers will need to be able to cover the costs of their:

    • Round-trip flights
    • Travel documents, passports, and visa applications
    • Vaccinations and any other health-related services you will need in preparation
    • Transportation to and from the airport
    • Transportation to anywhere in the country other than to and from the program site
    • Meals
    • Any additional gifts, merchandise, or goods you would like to purchase while in the country

As a non-profit organization, we unfortunately do not have the funds to finance the costs of our volunteers’ service missions. We believe it is essential that our programmatic funds are directed toward the aid and assistance that directly serves our beneficiaries and know that our volunteers would only want the same.

We will cover the costs of volunteers:

    • Room and board
    • Transportation to and from the program site

Our missions will last roughly 5-7 days. Volunteers are welcome to arrive and leave the country at any point they would like but will need to report to the program site/housing accommodations on a particular day and will need to leave the housing accommodations on a particular day.

Not exactly. Due to the limited number of volunteers we can bring on each mission and the large quantity of applications we expect to receive, we will only be able to offer a limited number of spots for each trip. Our Volunteer Management Coordinator will review all submissions and select the final candidates to speak with via Zoom before approving them for the trip. We are happy to provide an English-Arabic translator if Arabic is your primary or only language.

Our Volunteer Management Coordinator will ensure that you do in fact meet all the requirements and prerequisites to volunteer on our service trips. In addition, spots will be offered on a first come-first serve basis so make sure you submit your application as quickly as possible!

During the Zoom call, our volunteer management coordinator will get the chance to meet face to face with you, learn more about your interest and motivation in volunteering for UMR and participating in an international service mission, and ensure that you will be representing our organization professionally and appropriately throughout your service.

Our volunteer management coordinator will provide you with our volunteer expectations form, our liability waiver, a checklist of things you will need to obtain or complete before the trip, and a list of recommendations including restaurants, transportation services, hospital locations, etc.

To secure your place on our service mission, you will need to return and sign the above documents as well as providing us with a copy of your passport and your travel itinerary. We will then share your information with a representative at our international office and send you their information as well in addition to the location of the housing accommodations.

Provided that you meet our requirements and prerequisites, be assured that you will be accepted into a future service mission! You can never apply to too many missions and we will do our best to ensure that new volunteers are always accepted on every one of our trips to continue to expand our community.

Absolutely! Feel free to email our Volunteer Management Coordinator for assistance who would be happy to address any questions or concerns you may still have.
