11 Jun Gaza Emergency Appeal
Nearly a year has passed since the escalation of violence in Gaza last Ramadan but things are looking as bleak as ever. The economy is in deep recession; pledges of billions in aid have not been honored; and the reconstruction of the tens of thousands homes damaged and destroyed has barely begun. Some 10,000 Gaza residents are still sleeping on the floors of United Nations-run schools and thousands more are living in caravans, tents, and bombed-out apartments. Estimates suggest that 100,000 people remain displaced in Gaza.
Gaza Emergency Response
In the immediate aftermath of the summer hostilities, UMR formed a Muslim Relief Coalition for Gaza and signed an implantation partnership with UNRWA.
As well as supplying 400 families (at least 2000 individuals) with a month’s supply of food, the coalition was able to get over 350,000 lbs of flour into Gaza which was used to bake bread for 260,000 beneficiaries.
The coalition also provided 20 medical centers and hospitals in Gaza with over 160,000 liters of fuel to help them keep their generators on. Collectively these centers serve over 1.2 million people in Gaza.
Between 1 August and 31 October 2014, psychosocial activities were also funded by the coalition as well as activities for students when the academic year began in September 2014. The interventions focused on helping refugees to deal with the psychological consequences of the summer hostilities, through group activities as well as individual interventions. Children were provided with therapeutic toys, games, and story books, to assist their psychosocial recovery. In addition we supported a range ‘back to school’ recreation activities for students, designed to help children re-adjust to a learning environment.
UMR working with a number of partners also sent a medical container into Gaza. The container, which served over 80,000 people contained essential medication which is running low inside Gaza.
With your generous donations we want to continue our work in Gaza.
Gaza Winterization Campaign
In the wake of the ongoing blockade of Gaza, more than 700,000 people in Gaza faced the bitter winter of 2014 with continuous power shortages. UMR ran its annual winter drive and provided 3500 families with heaters, fuel, blankets, rugs, socks, hats, and jackets plus a 1 months’ supply of food to help them survive the winter.
